02 Five Elements
The Five Elements are five basic kinds: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water.
Core idea: the myriad things of the world are understood through these five; balance is maintained by generating (mutual promotion) and restraining (mutual checks) relationships.
- Generating: Wood → Fire → Earth → Metal → Water → Wood (Wood generates Fire, Fire generates Earth, …).
- Restraining: Wood → Earth → Water → Fire → Metal → Wood (Wood restrains Earth, Earth restrains Water, …).
A simple analogy: read it as an ancient Chinese taxonomy and philosophy of balance, somewhat like the Western four elements (earth, water, fire, air), but with more emphasis on dynamic relations than fixed composition.
It appears in traditional Chinese medicine, FengShui, diet, martial arts, and more—essentially a framework that uses patterns of nature to interpret the body, health, and how the world works.
